Encoded (series)

It is a historical present that womxn, as well as trans and gender-diverse peoples, who speak out, rage, fight or defy societal stereotype of womanhood and the gender binary, are minimised, belittled or even villified. It doesn't matter how valid or righteous that person is, they are forced into the stereotype of the Hysterical Woman who gets emotional over nonsense. It feels as though these voices - our voices- are speaking in a language foreign to the rest of the world. This series embodies this experience in Morse Code through the gendered medium of textiles and embroidery.

This series is a continuing body of work that is focused on the suppression of feminine voices. While this series was intended to initially relate to gender-based violence and discrimination, it has expanded to encompass medical biases and gaslighting in feminine health, reproductive rights, and societal imbalances that women, trans and gender-diverse peoples face on a daily basis.

Each work is an individual statement in Morse Code. They are intended to encompass feelings of pain, frustration, exhaustion, growth, strength, reflection and defiance. They are drawn from personal thoughts, literature, and social media.

This series was first displayed at Mundaring Art Centre's 'Hand in Hand' exhibition (2023) with the original eight (8) pieces and an accompanying zine. It was featured at UNO Studios in 'What did they tell you?' (2025) with the current twelve (12) pieces.
